Noise testing

If you are actively involved in motorsport or track days, it is almost certain that your track vehicle will be subject to noise restrictions. With all UK and European race circuits now having to comply with strict noise regulations (as little as 89dB), noisy cars are no longer tolerated. It is therefore inevitable that some cars will fail the required noise test and will not be allowed to participate resulting in a loss of track fees, time and much disappointment.

Exhaust systems tend to get louder with age as the internal packing and wadding deteriorates. Other factors such as air temperature and humidity can also affect the level of noise that your car is producing. This means that whilst on one day your car is within the respective limits, on another it may fall outside of those limits, preventing you from participating.

The initial noise test is a static test which is carried out using a hand held decibel meter. Each car is measured 0.5 meters away from the exhaust at a 45 degree angle when the engine is being held at 3/4 of the maximum RPM.
